Building Blocks to Transform the Built Environment: a manifesto for the next UK government

London + online + hybrid events in Birmingham & Edinburgh.

The construction industry requires true climate leadership by a government that embraces far-reaching system changes and implements them.

Building Blocks to Transform the Built Environment

The construction industry requires true climate leadership by a UK government that embraces far-reaching system changes and implements them.

Join us on the latest stage of our journey to create a national policy framework for the UK that faces the reality of the Climate and Biodiversity Emergency and creates a regenerative built environment, enabling society and nature to thrive.

With practical, impactful and implementable policies, Architects Declare's Building Blocks to Transform the Built Environment are about creating jobs, improving health, and restoring the natural world. Underpinned by a foundation of systemic change, the building blocks of resource Efficiency, Circular Economy and Social & Natural Infrastructures play to the strengths of professions across the sector: Architects, Building Service Engineers, Civil Engineers, Contractors, Interior Designers, Landscape Architects, Project Managers & Structural Engineers.

You can join us in-person at the Canal Museum in London or join online. Alternatively, if you are in Birmingham or Edinburgh and wish to join with others in person, Architects Declare signatories Howells and Architype are generously hosting special hybrid sessions on the evening: to watch the event screening, join in our live polls and network with others in the room.

Keynote speaker: We're delighted to have Kate Raworth set the context for how we influence policy and make a real change. Kate is the renegade economist making economics fit for 21st century realities & co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab.

See links for full programme.

Over the past few months, Architects Declare has been working others has been developing our draft set of policies. We took this to a roundtable discussion with developers, helping us to shape it into a set of three building blocks focused on Resource efficiency, Circular economy and Social & natural infrastructures. We then invited AD and other Built Environment Declares signatories to come together to explore, refine and prioritise our thinking through polls and breakout groups at a well-attended and active session that helped us understand the top priority policies people are looking for.

Now, this special industry event completes the cycle ahead of a launch to national policy audiences early next year - and into the election process. So, join us for an evening of discussion, energy and focus on how the next UK government and our industry can bring about meaningful and impactful change for our social, natural and planetary wellbeing.

The draft Building Blocks document shows how these building blocks need solid foundations of systemic economic and political change: an economy aligned within human well-being and planetary limits; UK laws to safeguard future generations; climate literacy embedded at all levels of society; and climate leadership fostered through reform of the political system.

Architects: join us online and have your say!

Five Point Plan soft launch

How do we change the UK trajectory to allow for a just transition that supports the built environment and our planet? Amidst all the current political climate chaos, we are proposing an alternative positive vision for a regenerative future. As a profession, we have the solutions but lack the policy framework to enact meaningful change.

At this free online event, you will gain insight into an emerging Five Point Plan developed by key industry leaders, and help us establish policy priorities and crystallise the vision.

Speakers:

  • Julia Barfield - Managing Director, Marks Barfield Architects + UK Architects Declare Steering Group
  • Will Arnold - Head of Climate Action at The Institution of Structural Engineers
  • Anna Woodeson - Director, PUNL Power Up North London

Introduction to the Architects Declare Practice Guide 2021

Join us to learn more about how the new Architects Declare Practice Guide helps your practice act on the climate & biodiversity emergency.

Hear from the team who produced the guide, which we launched at the RIBA & Architects Declare Built Environment Summit on 29th October, ahead of the start of COP26. We created the guide to help Architects Declare signatories convert their declaration of climate and biodiversity emergency into meaningful action and build momentum within their practice.

Part 1 is a Practice Roadmap that provides 5 simple steps to transform your business. Part 2 is the Project Design Guide focused on the fundamentals of truly sustainable design and demonstrated through exemplars.

This one-hour online event (9.30-10.30, Friday 26th November) will provide an overview of the guide’s purpose and intent and summaries of each of the chapters, followed by a Q&A session.

Tickets are by donation. You can give as little or as much as you wish. Your donation will greatly support the work of Architects Declare in its running costs and developing its programme to support signatories through initiatives such as the Practice Guide. The guide is available as a free download here.

Built Environment Summit 2021

In partnership with Architects Declare, RIBA presents the Built Environment Summit 2021: a global event taking place on 28 and 29 October following the publication of the Built for the Environment report and ahead of COP26 in Glasgow, which starts on 1 November.

Today 38% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to the built environment. The summit is a call to action, bringing together professionals from across the international built environment sector to address the urgent need to drive changes in behaviour to reduce carbon emissions.

We cannot meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C temperature rise limit above pre-industrial levels without transforming the way we plan, design, build, operate and adapt our built environment.

Over two days, speakers from across the globe, appearing both physically and virtually, will lead topical discussions, explore and share innovative practice, and encourage interdisciplinary thinking to tackle the crisis and provide inspiration to drive significant change in behaviour.

In the lead-up to COP26 the summit will demonstrate the importance of cross-industry collaboration to harness political support and embolden governments to work with the sector to decarbonise construction. The time for change is now.

Practical Hacks: Net Zero Carbon Basics and Embodied Carbon

Practical Hacks: Net Zero Carbon Basics and Embodied Carbon

The next Construction Declares meeting is hosted by the London group. The two topics covered during this event are Net Zero Carbon Basics and Embodied Carbon: practical hacks. Each topic will have a twenty minute presentation followed by a ten minute focused workshop in smaller groups with a follow-up Q&A after. At the end of the evening the audience will have clear take-away understandings and hacks to use in their own projects.

The Net Zero talk will introduce the concept of whole life carbon and present practical guidance on setting and tracking carbon reduction targets through a projects design, construction and operational phases. Following this we discuss approaches to integrating Net Zero into the design teams scope, and give an overview of emerging third party certification schemes.

Following that we will be discussing typical small to medium scale UK construction methods, focusing on practical solutions and hacks to help designers to reduce the carbon footprint in their designs. Beginning with a case study of a residential property, we break down different floor and wall types to understand its implication on both inherent and applied embodied energy, concluding with three structural hacks for typical residential interventions.

There will be a Q&A with the speakers after the presentations

Architects Declare and Business Declares: Net Zero and Regenerative Places

Architects Declare and Business Declares: Net Zero and Regenerative Places

The built environment is a major contributor to climate and ecological breakdown - accounting for around 40% of emissions and 25% of waste. We know this needs to change, and that we all need to work together towards a net zero and regenerative built environment even more so in a time of recovery.

...So we ask how can the construction industry be part of the solution not the problem? And what do we need to deliver net zero and regenerative places in a socially responsible way. This uk architects declare business declares event seeks to find answers to these questions and provide an opportunity for key stakeholders in the development of the built environment to come together and share ideas. Hosted by the Architecture Foundation

In a discussion chaired by architect Piers Taylor, policy advisor Gwen Buck and Architects’s Declare steering group members engineer Clara Bagenal George and architect Peter Clegg will discuss what the Architect’s Declare pledge has achieved one year on, what needs to change in terms of policy, why it is so hard to make genuinely low carbon buildings - and what zero carbon means in any case.
